Dr. James A. Gibson, Jr. answered the call into the ministry of Jesus Christ in 1971. He was licensed by the Greater Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama on June 13, 1971 and ordained in 1975.
He is a product of the Birmingham public school system. After graduating from Western-Olin High School, he began his undergraduate work at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin and complete his undergraduate work at The University of Alabama at Birmingham where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology. In 1989, He received a Master of Divinity Degree from the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He earned a Doctor of Ministry Degree from the United Theological Seminary in Dayton Ohio in 2016.
In 1975, Dr. Gibson became the pastor of the Community Primitive Baptist Church where he served until 1994 when he became the pastor of the Greater Temple Missionary Baptist Church where he currently serves.
Dr. Gibson is very active in the community and in other ministerial organizations. He has formerly served as a chaplain at Trinity Hospital, a volunteer chaplain for the Jefferson County Sheriff Department and treasurer for the Mount Pilgrim District Baptist Association. He is currently he president of the board of directors of Congregations for Public Health, a trustee of the Birmingham-Easonian Baptist Bible College, a trustee of the Mount Pilgrim District Baptist Association, a member of the Alabama Missionary Baptist State convention and a founding board member of the Alabama Justice Ministry Network.
Dr. Gibson is a powerful preacher of the Gospel and a strong biblical scholar. As he works in God’s vineyard, he is guided by II Timothy 2:15. He is a lifelong student of God’s word and is careful to “rightly divide the word of truth”. He believes that through the preaching and teaching of the Word of God, this world can be converted into the kingdom of God; and that we, as Christians are called to be God’s witnesses.
He is married to Jackie May Gibson and the couple has three adult children, Monica Dowe, James III and Samuel and three grandchildren, Isaiah, Alayna and Tristan.
